Lionel Messi has once again shown why he is one of the greatest footballers of all time as he broke the Ligue 1 record for assists in a single season on Tuesday night.
The Argentine forward, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), netted his 20th assist of the campaign in PSG's 4-1 victory over Bordeaux at Parc des Princes. This was the most assists ever scored by any player in a single Ligue 1 season and it is also the highest total in the history of the French top flight.
Messi's achievement is even more impressive given that he is currently playing out of position due to injury. The 34-year-old has been struggling with a knee problem since August and has only made two appearances this season, scoring once in each of those games.
Despite being unable to play, Messi has still managed to lead PSG to the top of the table and they now have a nine-point lead over second-placed Lyon heading into the international break. His return to fitness could be crucial in helping PSG defend their title, but until then, we can simply enjoy watching him score goals and set up teammates like nobody else on the planet.
